  1. This release contains the 1999.07.15 version of Anvil Studio by Willow Software.
  2. It replaces the old versions named ast98xx.zip/exe, mstudioZ.exe.
  3.  
  4. mstudioZ.exe and AST9901.EXE are self-extracting setup files.
  5. AST9901.ZIP is the equivalent ZIP file (run the program SETUP.EXE).
  6.  
  7. Anvil Studio is a "Freeware" program that runs under Windows 95 and Windows NT.
  8. It supports multi-track recording, composing, and editing of music
  9. using AUDIO, MIDI, and sampled percussions.
  10. Audio effects include delay, pitch change, filtering, and reverse.
  11. Anvil Studio is designed to work with optional accessories from
  12. Willow Software such as sheet music printing, piano exercises,
  13. ear training exercises, and voice-pitch analysis.

  15. Requires 16 meg RAM (32 meg for Audio recording), and a Sound card.
  16. To run under Windows NT 4.0, it requires Microsoft's NT Service Pack 3,
  17. available for download from Microsoft's WEB sites at:

  43. New features in the 1999.08.01 version include:
  44.  o  Added Edit / Undo menu item when composing Instrument or Rhythm tracks.
  45.  o  Added Select All to Edit Menu for staff view of Compose page
  46.  o  Added Keyboard Shortcuts to the View/Options page, so you can
  47.     keep your hands on the keyboard more, and on the mouse less
  48.     while composing.
  49.  o  If you select a range of notes on the Compose page and adjust
  50.     the compose page's volume, the volume for all selected notes
  51.     will be set.
  52.  o  To insert a large number of rests in a staff, set the note duration to Whole note
  53.     and double-click on the Insert-rest button.
  54.  o  Added button to hide Controllers on Compose page
  55.  o  Displays proper grid on Rhythm page for 7/8 or 9/8 time.

  62.     o Metronome used to only play accent notes for 4/4 time.  Now, it follows
  63.       the time signature of the active track.
  64.     o Beamed 16th note followed by 8th was displayed as 2 beamed 8th notes.
  65.     o In some key signatures, some notes not-in-key were drawn with sharps and flats
  66.       instead of as natural.
  67.     o When MIDI Setup accessory was installed, it was not automatically
  68.       loading patch libraries since version 1999.06.03.
  69.     o When deleting selection in treble clef or bass clef, but not both,
  70.       if selection included rests, additional rests were getting inserted
  71.       and note durations were getting changed.
  72.     o For versions with Print-Sheet accessories before 1999.08.01:
  73.       o The Lexmark 3200 Series ColorFine, and other printers that do support
  74.         600 dots per inch but not 300 dots per inch only allowed 9 staffs per page
  75.         and not 4 or 6 staffs per page.
  76.       o Runtime error occurred when staffs-per-page field was blank
  77.  
  78. New features in the 1999.07.10 version include:
  79.  o  Added the following to the Note Properties dialog:
  80.     o  Force note to other clef
  81.     o  Display Enharmonic Note
  82.  o  Beamed notes can now include chords.
  83.  o  Fixed problems:
  84.     o  It was sometimes ignoring the first REC button press when
  85.        recording Audio tracks.
  86.     o  A cut/copy/paste timing bugs was fixed.
  87.     o  When a single Audio track was recorded, the File / Export Audio
  88.        menu item would sometimes create an empty file.
  89.     o  Was drawing accidentals incorrectly in a few instances.

  91. New features in the 1999.07.08 version include:
  92.  o  Replaced tabs at the bottom of the screen with menu items.
  93.  o  The Record and Mixer pages were combined into a single page.
  94.  o  On screens 800 x 600 pixels and larger, the compose page now
  95.     displays the track list from the Record page.
  96.  o  It is now possible to select notes on only the Treble or Bass clefs,
  97.     as well as notes on both clefs.
  98.  o  On the Compose page for Instrument tracks, you position the
  99.     cursor by pressing the left or right cursor keys.
  100.     You can extend a selection by holding the Shift key while pressing these.
  101.     You can scroll to the start or end of track by holding the Ctrl key
  102.     while pressing these.
  103.  o  Added Beam to Next option to Note properties
  104.     Added "Enable Beam Lines on Compose Page" to Options page
  105.  o  Fixed problems:
  106.     o In versions since 1999.07.01, it failed to work when Internet
  107.       Explorer was not installed.
  108.     o In versions since 1999.07.05, there were some staff-editing bugs.
  109.     o It sometimes said machine was not fast enough for audio recording
  110.     o It was drawing flats at wrong spot for some keys
  111.     o Since version 1999.06.01, Out of memory (error 7) occurred
  112.       after Piano Roll or Rhythm Composer was refreshed many times.

  114. New features in the 1999.06.06 version include:
  115.  o  Added Time Shift property to Audio Tracks, so that an Audio track
  116.     can be set to start later than the rest of the song.
  117.     This saves disk space for songs where the first several minutes of an
  118.     audio track is to be silent.
  119.  o  Fixed problems:
  120.     o  MIDI recording is synced with the metronome more accurately.
  121.     o On Piano Roll and Rhythm tracks, last note in measure sometimes got lost
  122.     o Change Pitch for Audio Tracks would sometimes crash.
  123.     o All columns on the Record page can be resized.
  124.     o Pitch Change on Compose Page for Audio tracks was reducing volume.
  125.     o Importing a stereo .WAV file to an audio track setting the
  126.       track as stereo, but was failing to set the output audio port
  127.       to stereo, causing it to be played as mono.
  128.     o The following bugs occurred in version 1999.05.07, and are now fixed:
  129.       o time Signatures of 6/8 and 12/8 were improperly displayed as 6/4 and 12/4.
  130.       o the compose page for Piano Roll and Rhythm tracks did not allow you
  131.         to change the time signature from 4/4.

  133. New features in the 1999.06.05 version include:
  134.  o  With the MIDI Setup accessory, patches from multiple banks of 
  135.     of a synthesizer can be accessed at the same time.
  136.  o  Fixed problem with PitchBend control in Performance ToolPack accessory.
  137.  o  Simplified settings for Sound Module tool on Perform page.
  138.  o  Fixed problems:
  139.     o Lyrics sometimes over-wrote each other because they were spaced too closely.
  140.     o No longer sets audio playback volume to maximum every time the program starts.

  142. New features in the 1999.06.01 version include:
  143.  o  Added Sync button so Recording and Playing can be triggered by
  144.     external MIDI devices.
  145.  o  Added ability to:
  146.     o  insert Slurs, Crescendos, Decrescendos, and Repeat symbols.
  147.     o  insert chord labels at the top of the staff
  148.     o  insert Time Signatures and Key Signatures in the middle of a track.
  149.  o  On the Compose page, notes can now be dragged up and down
  150.     the staff to change their pitch.
  151.     Notes can be dragged to the bottom of the screen to delete them.
  152.  o  Added Lock Score checkbox to the Compose page so that you
  153.     can experiment with notes on the keyboard without inserting them
  154.     into the score.
  155.  o  The new default is for DirectX to be disabled, since it
  156.     results in "Device in use" errors on some systems.
  157.     It is automatically enabled when you press the FX or DirectX buttons.
  158.  o  With Multi-View accessory, you can now copy and paste between
  159.     two instrument tracks on the compose page.
  160.  o  Added options to disable Full-Duplex test, and to disable DirectX
  161.  o  Colors are now adjustable on the Options page.
  162.  o  Does a better job of sharing Audio out devices with WaveTable synthesizers
  163.     like Yamaha SXG50.
  164.  o  Fixed problems:
  165.     o  fixed several DirectX related problems that resulted in Device-in-use errors
  166.        and quite audio tracks.  These problems first appeared in version 1999.05.05.
  167.     o  when deleting measures on Rhythm tracks, or from a Piano Roll,
  168.        extra rests were sometimes inserted.
  169.     o  dragging staff notations over lyrics sometimes appeared jerky
  170.     o  changing duration with Note Properties sometimes had no effect
  171.     o  It failed with error 80041015 on systems with no MIDI In devices
  172.     o  Since version 1999.05.01, key signatures had been drawn with sharps
  173.        even when they should have been flats
  174.     o  There was a problem with audio Pitch modification
  175.     o  Pro-Mix control editing wasn't working properly when
  176.        Compose page was set to Piano Roll format.
  177.     o  Duplets through Septuplets on and Compose-Piano Roll and Rhythm pages
  178.        weren't aligned properly.
  179.     o  Enhanced the Repair Song menu item.
  180.     o  Numerous other small problems were fixed.

  182. New features in the 1999.05.07 version include:
  183.  o  Made initialization faster.
  184.  o  When displaying lyrics, key signatures and triplet lines
  185.     in the bass clef were off.
  186.  o  Added item to Options page to disable Full-Duplex sound card testing.

  188. New features in the 1999.05.06 version include:
  189.  o  You can now view and edit a track's lyrics.
  190.     The 1999.05.04 version of the Print Sheet accessory now includes
  191.     option to print lyrics.
  192.  o  Added ability to quantitize a selection of notes rather just the entire track.
  193.  o  Fixed problems:
  194.     o  Works better with Helf-Duplex sound cards
  195.     o  Added Port Latency properties to get around synchronization
  196.        problems that occurred when using WaveTable MIDI synthesizers.
  197.     o  Fixed some minor score display problems
  198.     o  Enabling/Disabling an Audio track wasn't causing all audio tracks to get re-mixed,
  199.        causing it to seem to have no effect.

  202. New features in the 1999.05.02 version include:
  203.  o  Added support for DirectX Audio pluggins.  See the Mixer page for details.
  204.  o  Pressing Ctrl key while entering a note is a shorthand for making
  205.     the new note a dotted note.
  206.  o  When changing an Instrument track to a Rhythm track, you can
  207.     retain notes as drum notes rather than erasing them.
  208.  o  Fixed problems:
  209.     o  Tempo editing with Pro-Mix accessory was not working with
  210.        Midi-1 files.
  211.     o  clicking on notes on the record page could sometimes result in
  212.        an Invalid Parameter error.

  214. New features in the 1999.04.06 version include:
  215.  o  Added option to record each MIDI channel to its own track, rather
  216.     than recording all recorded MIDI channels to the currently active track.
  217.     This lets you record up to 16 MIDI tracks simultaneously.

  219.  o  Fixed problems:
  220.     o  On systems with very large disks, recording an Audio track
  221.        could result in an Overflow error.
  222.     o  The menu item: File/Truncate Song.../From start to current position
  223.        was not working properly for Instrument and Rhythm tracks.
  224.        It was deleting the correct notes, but not shifting the remaining ones,
  225.        leaving a silent gap.
  226.     o  Pasting notes from one track to another was not updating the notes
  227.        MIDI channel, which caused the pasted notes to continue to play
  228.        the previous track's instrument.
  229.     o  On some machines, Multi-Audio 1/8 was only able to record and mix
  230.        4 tracks instead of 8.

  232. New features in the 1999.03.15 version include:
  233.  o  Added more help information
  234.  o  Fixed problems:
  235.     o Edit/Quantitize was moving track to end of the song, and left
  236.       progress bar on screen.
  237.     o On Compose page, wasn't allowing hand to be positioned
  238.       over a rest.
  239.     o Runtime errors would sometimes occur when run on 800 x 600
  240.       screen with Multi-View or Combo-Pack accessories.

  268.        when Mixer's page had Stereo Output checked while playing
  269.        recording and then playing a Rhythm track that had Sampled audio.

  354.     o  On Compose page for Rhythm track, Tempo setting was not accuratly calibrated in Beats-Per-Minute.
  355.     o  With some Audio cards, starting the song from anywhere other
  356.        than the start of the song caused all MIDI tracks to play Piano instruments.

  359.  o  Added staff style control to display 1 or 2 treble or bass clefs
  360.  o  Displays notes outside staff limits
  361.  o  The Echo MIDI Events checkbox now has an effect even when not Recording.

  363.  o  Added File/Merge Song menu to allow copying tracks between .MID files.

  397.  o  New tools have been added to Anvil Studio's Compose page,
  398.     including popup menu control of individual note properties including:
  399.       pitch, duration, volume, stem direction,
  400.       staccato, and tie-to-next-note.
  401.  o  Several errors were fixed including some related to how
  402.     accidentals get displayed.

  404. New features in the 1998.07.07 version include:
  405.  o  Better tools on the Compose page.
  406.      o   select, cut, copy, paste notes on the staff
  407.      o   drag notes from the Note palette to the staff
  408.      o   remove individual notes and change note attributes
